Working out of a modern woodworking operations, Wurms Diversified Solutions already had sixteen CNC routers used for cutting and shaping their panel parts, plus a combination of manual drilling processes used in conjunction with drill templates or fixtures for fabricating holes into the cut edge of wood parts. Rick Wurm, VP Operations, was conscious that having so many manual drilling operations was time consuming and not highly accurate, leading him to look for a CNC machine capable of carrying out all of these different operations that so far, they have been unable to do.
Wurms Diversified Solutions CAD/CAM Systems Manager, Kyle Sanderson, saw Thermwood’s aggregate head upgrade when completing a 5 day machine operation and programming course at Thermwood and, after reviewing various video clips with Wurm, it became apparent that one of Thermwood aggregate heads could well meet their requirements. As a result, they equipped WDS CNC machines with these special tools that extend the machine’s functionality by allowing for horizontal or angled machining, routing, sawing and drilling.
Wurm comments "As soon as management saw what an angular or angle head could do on the machine we could see it was an extremely well engineered add on. When we saw it in action we were impressed with drilling, cutting (straight or angled) and shaping all carried out on one machine from a single program."
WDS drill head gives the ability to drill deep holes on the cut sides and ends of a wood product. This configuration eliminates the need for a manual post CNC drilling operation and provides tighter tolerances than WDS production associates could previously provide.
Sanderson comments “I am confident that moving forward we will discover more and more things that the CNC machine can do using the aggregate head.

This featured product is a CNC routed component which will become a wooden top on a nesting table. It consists of a moisture resistant MDF with laminate on 1 side. This product gets a stain applied to the rounded edges and the bottom side has a light brown paper backer. When this component leaves WDS it is attached to a powder coated metal frame and its end use is a floral display.
Moisture resistant MDF has special properties which make it suitable for interior applications where there is the risk of occasional wetting or prolonged exposure to high levels of humidity. It can be used for sink bases, dishwasher enclosures, institutional hospital casework and counters, display fixtures, store fixtures and various other applications such as laboratories, locker rooms, laundry areas and cafeterias of schools. Its low thickness swell properties and smooth surface make it an ideal substrate for thin paper and foil, especially when used with water based adhesives.
